Understanding FOCUS Integration in Uniskai

Learn how user can reach FOCUS in the Uniskai

Updated over 3 months ago

What is FOCUS?

FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification) is a community-driven data specification developed by the FinOps Foundation.
Its goal is to standardize cloud cost and usage data across different cloud providers — such as AWS, Azure, and GCP — to make financial analysis and reporting consistent and transparent.

In simple terms, FOCUS helps organizations speak a common language when it comes to understanding cloud costs, no matter which provider they use.

Why FOCUS Matters in FinOps

Cloud billing data from various providers often differs in format, terminology, and granularity. This makes it difficult for FinOps practitioners to perform unified analysis or build consistent dashboards.
That’s where FOCUS helps.

With FOCUS, organizations can:

  • Normalize billing data across multiple providers.

  • Standardize cost metrics and dimensions for accurate comparisons.

  • Enable consistent reporting and KPIs across all cloud environments.

  • Reduce complexity in integrating and visualizing cost data.

By adopting FOCUS, FinOps platforms like Uniskai can provide users with clear, reliable, and comparable cost insights, regardless of where workloads are hosted.

Why Uniskai Uses FOCUS

Uniskai integrates the FOCUS specification to help users manage, export, and share their cost and usage data in a standardized format that aligns with FinOps best practices.
This ensures:

  • Better collaboration between finance, engineering, and business teams.

  • Easier integration with external BI tools and reporting systems.

  • Improved accuracy when tracking trends, savings, and forecasts across multiple clouds.

Essentially, FOCUS provides a single source of truth for cloud billing data — enabling every stakeholder to interpret costs the same way.

Conformance gap report

Uniskai’s integration with FOCUS is based on direct data ingestion from cloud providers, ensuring that every report aligns with official cost and usage exports.

To maintain transparency, Uniskai incorporates FOCUS conformance reports provided by cloud vendors. These reports measure how closely each provider’s billing data follows the FOCUS standard.

  • AWS Conformance Gap Report: AWS FOCUS Conformance Table
This report outlines how AWS Cost and Usage Reports (CUR) align with the FOCUS 1.0 data model, showing supported and partially supported dimensions.

  • Azure Conformance Summary: Microsoft FinOps FOCUS Conformance
This summary describes Azure’s mapping and compliance level with the FOCUS standard, identifying supported cost and usage fields.

By integrating these official mappings, Uniskai ensures that its data aligns closely with provider-verified FOCUS specifications — reducing discrepancies and improving confidence in reporting accuracy.

How It Works in Uniskai

Inside Uniskai’s Cloudcosts → Costs Overview, users can export their data in several formats, including CSV, Excel, or FOCUS.

This allows users to directly use the standardized FOCUS format to perform FinOps analysis, integrate into other tools, or share with external auditors.

How to Access and Use FOCUS Export

  1. Navigate to Cloudcosts → Costs Overview in the left-hand menu.

  2. Choose your desired filters (e.g., cloud account, provider, or date range).

  3. Click on the Save To button located in the upper right corner.

  4. Select the FOCUS option from the dropdown list.

Benefits of Using FOCUS in Uniskai

  • Consistent structure – unify multi-cloud billing data.

  • Seamless FinOps alignment – work with industry-approved standards.

  • Interoperability – easily share data with tools that support FOCUS format.

  • Transparency – create clear visibility into cloud cost drivers and trends.
